Malia is 5 Months Old

Dear Malia,

It has been a month of firsts for you. During this month, you learned and then quickly mastered how to roll from your belly to your back. You quickly realized that this meant you could roll across the room to explore new things and get toys that were previously out of your reach, including Hadley’s toys. Hadley didn’t always appreciate that, but you will both continue to learn to share and play together.

As you take this first step to being mobile, Mommy must relearn all about baby proofing. I am finding that is much more difficult with a two year old. Right now it is confined to the floor, but soon I know you will be pulling up and there will be so much more to do.

You also experienced your first Christmas. You slept through most of the gift opening, but you really liked chewing on the wrapping paper while you were awake. You are showing more interest in your toys, which is fun to watch.

The transition from your bassinet in our room to your crib in your room went well. We have had some rough nights, but you seem to enjoy your crib and all of your extra space.

On New Year’s Eve you tried solids for the first time. I was planning on waiting a little longer, but every time I took a bite you would try to direct my fork to your mouth. It was different than you expected and you didn’t like it right away. After trying a few kinds of food, we discovered sweet potatoes. You now eat a whole ounce without a problem.

And just last night you sat up unassisted for the first time. Before you would straighten up and fall over after a few seconds, but now you are sitting up for 2-3 minutes at a time. I think you like the new perspective and already you are learning to make adjustments and correct your balance.

Throughout all of these firsts and learning experiences, you have always been smiling and happy. It is clear to us and everyone who meets you that you have an easy going, laid back personality that I love to watch develop.
