I Love Baltimore

Just a warning, this is probably going to be a long post with a lot of pictures. Even though we were only in Baltimore for 5 days, we had so much fun and did so many things.

I went to bed at the same time as the girls so I could drive through the night and hopefully have everyone sleep for at least 4 to 5 hours before we had to stop. Vermont didn’t want us to leave though. There was a snow storm going on and it took me an hour and a half to go what normally takes less than an hour. To add to the problems, Malia was constipated and having a lot of trouble sleeping in her car seat. While we didn’t get as far as I wanted before we had to stop, it worked out well as we found a great place for breakfast. Unfortunately, I still don’t know what town we were in, so there is very little chance of ever finding it again.

The rest of the drive was pretty uneventful. It was even nice after we got Malia some medicine and she was able to go potty. We arrived in Baltimore after about 10 hours of traveling. We rested for a little while in the hotel and then headed to Medieval Times.

I had found a promo code for a free upgrade, so we were in the first row cheering on the yellow knight. The food was really good and we all had a lot of fun. Malia loved the horses and all of the action. Hadley caught a flower from our brave knight. While the yellow knight didn’t win, he fought valiantly, and we were happy to be cheering for him.

The next day we headed to the Maryland Zoo. We love zoos and try to visit one in all the different cities we visit. The Maryland Zoo was nice with a lot of tree coverage, an expansive kid’s area, and a circular layout.

Monday we visited the National Aquarium and the Historic Ships of Baltimore. The aquarium was a lot of fun. It was divided into sections based on habitats. It included small sharks, sea turtles, and dolphins. After a little while the girls were getting restless.

After lunch we decided to take a break from the aquarium to visit the Historic Ships. We toured the submarine USS Torsk as well as the naval ship USS Constellation. The USS Constellation is the sister ship of the USS Constitution, which we saw while we were in Boston.

Both of the girls enjoyed the submarine. Malia didn’t make it through the USS Constellation, but Hadley had fun exploring the different rooms and pretending to shoot the cannons.

The Port Discovery Children’s Museum was our destination for Tuesday. I think this was the girls’ favorite place. We were there all day, and I think they could have happily gone back many days in a row. Port Discovery is full of hands on activities, rooms for pretending, a huge climbing structure, and a great water room.

Our last day in Baltimore, we went to the Maryland Science Center. It ended up being Pi Day (3/14), so it was very, very busy. We still had a lot of fun, and the afternoon was really nice after all of the school groups had left. After visiting the dinosaur section, I realized just how much I have learned from PBS’s Dinosaur Train.

We headed home the next day, but not before a quick stop by Charm City Cakes (Ace of Cakes on Food Network) so I could get a picture. As I was taking the picture, I saw Geoff, my favorite cake designer, riding his bike by the store.

The drive home was 11.5 hours long. It was a long trip, but definitely worth it for all of the fun we had. Gideon says there is a Navy Harbor in Baltimore, so I told him if he ever gets the opportunity to get stationed there to take it. It is a great city, and I can’t wait to go back some day.
